A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
