The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like typical physical horror, but inside Together lies a intense contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He fears the concept of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
